I think Apple did a good job with Shortcuts. As long as you mostly bought into having mostly Apple-branded technology, Shortcuts provide a pretty good way of automating your life.

The seamless way of sharing shortcuts across multiple devices and make them public with a simple tap on your iPhone sets citizen developers up for success if they are interested in sharing this lightweight form of apps with the world.
